In most breeds, a sheep's fleece grows all year round. Without shearing it becomes heavy, hot and dirty, and in summer a soiled back end attracts flies. This collection is about shearing and the skin underneath: a cordless shearing machine, hand shears and care sprays.
Shearing: do it yourself or have it done?
For a few sheep, many keepers have a shearer come in. If you want to shear yourself, you choose between hand shears and a machine. The heart-shaped hand shears are suitable for tidying the back end or around the tail, or for a single sheep if you take your time. The FarmClipper Clipster cordless shearing machine works without a cable, so you can shear in the field or in a barn without a power socket. More on machines is in shearing machines and blades and shearing machines for sheep and livestock.
When to shear?
Most sheep are sheared once the nights are no longer cold and before it gets really warm, usually in late spring. A freshly shorn sheep needs shelter from rain and cold for the first few days. Breeds that shed naturally need little or no shearing.
Skin and fleece in summer
Check sheep more often in warm spells, especially around the tail and back end. Clip away dirty wool, so flies get less of a chance. For the fleece, Excellent supplies Barricade Schaap (250 and 500 ml) and M.R. Spray Schaap (500 ml); read the label for use and application. If you see a sheep that is restless, bites at its flank or has patches of wet wool, check it straight away and call your vet if in doubt.
Points to note
Only shear dry sheep: wet wool clogs the comb and the wool spoils. Keep blades sharp and clean, and oil a machine according to the manual. Shear a ewe that is close to lambing carefully or after consultation.

Frequently asked questions
When do I shear my sheep?
Usually in late spring, when the nights are no longer cold and before it gets warm. Breeds that shed by themselves need little or no shearing.
Can I shear a sheep with hand shears?
Yes, with patience. Hand shears are especially handy for tidying the back end or for a single sheep.
Why is a clean back end important?
Soiled wool attracts flies in summer. By clipping that wool away, you reduce the risk.
