The difference between a ten-minute stable job and a half-hour one often lies in the tool itself: a shovel too wide for your bedding or a handle that is just too short. This collection contains hand tools for manure, feed and floors: a water broom, aluminium shovels from Mustang, a complete manure fork, a plastic feed rake and separate handles to replace worn ones.
The shovel: width decides what you move
The Mustang aluminium shovels are available with a blade 27, 33 or 38 cm wide. The narrow blade gets into corners and under feed troughs better, and stays easy to lift even when full. The wide blade moves more loose material in one go, such as sawdust, pellets or snow. Aluminium weighs less than steel, which you notice when you shovel out a whole stable. The blades are supplied without a handle; you buy the matching handle separately.
Choosing handles
- Straight, 130 cm, 40 mm thick: intended for the aluminium shovel; long enough to shovel upright.
- 95 cm with D-grip: shorter, with a handle at the top. Gives grip for heavy, short shovelling, such as throwing manure onto a barrow.
- 150 cm aluminium handle: light and long, for those who work a lot with a broom or rake.
Before ordering, measure the diameter of the socket in your shovel or broom head. A handle that is too thin will wobble; one that is too thick will not go in.
Broom, manure fork and feed rake
The Bürsten Walter water broom has Perlon bristles and a 35 cm head. Perlon absorbs little water, so the broom is suitable for sweeping a wet floor clean. The manure fork comes complete with a 115 cm handle and is designed to sift droppings out of straw or wood fibre bedding. With the plastic feed rake, you push hay or silage back to the feed barrier.
Good to know
For pushing away wet manure on a concrete floor, a scraper or floor squeegee is handier than a broom; those are in manure scrapers & floor squeegees. An overview of tools for daily mucking out is in poo pickers and stable tools. Buckets are in buckets & tubs, gloves in safety & protection. More stable tools are under stable & yard.
Frequently asked questions
Which shovel width should I choose for a horse stable?
For a stable with straw or wood fibre, many people work with a narrower shovel or a manure fork. A wide blade is mainly handy for loose material on a flat floor.
Does the aluminium shovel come with a handle?
No, the shovels are supplied without a handle. Choose a straight handle or a shorter handle with D-grip yourself.
Can I also sweep dry with the water broom?
Yes, but it is made for wet work. For a dry, dusty floor, a broom with finer bristles is often more pleasant.
