Choosing between plant and fish

Linseed oil is a popular choice and is given daily by many owners. Salmon oil and cod liver oil come from fish and have a different fatty acid composition from plant oil. Cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D. If your horse already gets a vitamin supplement or a complete mineral feed, discuss with your vet whether extra cod liver oil is appropriate.

For the amount, follow the feeding advice on the label. If you have several horses or use a lot of oil, choose a larger pack; for one pony a small bottle is more practical, because an opened bottle does not keep indefinitely.

Points to note

  • Oil is high in energy. Count it in the ration, especially for a horse that puts on weight easily.
  • Build up the amount over a few days, so your horse can get used to the taste and feed.
  • Store oil cool, dark and tightly closed. If oil smells rancid, do not use it any more.
  • Hoof oil is something else: you apply that to the hoof. You will find it in hoof oil and hoof care.

Other additions are in horse supplements, including hooves and coat, vitamins and minerals and muscles and joints.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil do I give my horse?
That differs per product and per horse. Stick to the feeding advice on the label and build up the amount gradually.

What is the difference between salmon oil and linseed oil?
Linseed oil is plant-based, salmon oil comes from fish. They differ in fatty acid composition; which one suits depends on the rest of the ration.

How long does an opened bottle of oil keep?
That is stated on the packaging. Store the bottle cool and dark and close it after every use; a rancid smell means you should no longer feed it.

Can I combine cod liver oil with a vitamin supplement?
Cod liver oil itself contains vitamins A and D. So consult your vet before giving it alongside a vitamin or mineral supplement.
