For a stable, two types of fly trap work best together: a scented bait trap outdoors that catches flies near the entrance, and fly ribbon or sticky rolls indoors that catch the flies that still get in. You will find the parts for both here: the Knock Pest FlyNip fly trap and fly bucket with separate fly attractant and refill, the Resoluut FlyNip, the Flybuster Garden Trap, the Knock Pest Fly Trap XL, 400 and 700 metre fly ribbon and fly cord, yellow sticky rolls and the Zapi Classic fly catcher.
Bait trap or ribbon: what goes where?
| Type | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scented bait trap (FlyNip, Flybuster) | Outdoors, away from doors and windows | The bait smells strongly; close by, you actually draw flies inside |
| Fly ribbon or fly cord on a roll | In the stable, along the length of the aisle | With a long roll, you pull a fresh section along as soon as the ribbon is full |
| Sticky roll or fly catcher | Small spaces, tack room, chicken coop | Easy to hang up and replace |
Practical tips
Hang ribbon and sticky rolls high enough that horses, cows or you do not walk into them with your head, but in the brightest parts of the stable, where flies like to sit. Put a bait trap in the sun and replace the attractant in time; a spent trap hardly catches anything. You get the best results if you also tackle the breeding sites: flies lay their eggs in manure and wet bedding, so regular mucking out makes a big difference.
Other insects, other traps
Horseflies in the field are hardly tempted by an ordinary fly trap; there are separate horsefly traps for them. For wasps there are wasp traps. Indoors, in a feed kitchen or milking parlour, a UV lamp with glue board can be the answer; see electric fly killers. Protect the horse itself with fly spray. Frequently asked questions
Where do I hang a FlyNip fly trap?
Outdoors, in the sun and a few metres away from doors, windows and places where you sit. Close to the stable, you actually lure extra flies inside.
How long does fly ribbon last?
Until it is full or dusty. With a roll system, you then pull a new section along, without rehanging everything.
Does a bait fly trap smell?
Yes, the bait and the trapped flies smell strongly. That is why such a trap belongs outdoors and not in a space where people or feed are.
