An older horse that comes out of the stable stiff, or a sport horse that jumps a lot: in both cases, owners look for support for the musculoskeletal system. This collection contains complementary feeds for muscles and joints, as powder, liquid and lick tub.

A sensible order

If your horse moves unevenly or is lame, the vet comes first. A supplement does not mask pain and does not repair injury. Once there is a diagnosis, or if you want to support a healthy horse in heavy training, choose a product based on the form your horse eats best. Fussy eaters often accept a liquid over the feed more easily than powder. For horses kept only at grass, a lick tub is practical.

Give each product enough time; joint support is usually fed as a long-term supplement. Exercise, a suitable weight and good shoeing count at least as much.

Do you compete?

Herbal products such as devil's claw can contain substances that are not permitted in sport. Check your federation's rules and stop in good time before a competition if necessary.

For external care, such as a cooling gel after training, see horse care. Related supplements: vitamins and minerals and electrolytes after sweating. Or go back to all horse supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Does a joint supplement help against arthritis?
A supplement is a complementary feed, not a treatment for a condition. With arthritis or lameness, draw up a plan together with your vet; nutrition can be part of it.

Is devil's claw permitted in sport?
That differs per set of rules and can change. Always check your federation's current list before feeding it during the competition season.

Which is handier: powder or liquid?
You mix powder into hard feed; you pour a liquid over the feed. If your horse is a fussy eater, try the liquid form first.
