Mosquito control starts at the water they come from: every water butt, bucket or blocked gutter with standing water can be a nursery. For the adult mosquitoes that then fly around, there are two types of device here: mosquito lamps that catch mosquitoes and a mosquito repeller with sound signals. At the source: standing water
Empty buckets, wheelbarrows and containers that stand outside, cover a water butt and keep gutters clear. Drinkers and feeders that you refresh daily give little opportunity. Where water has to stand, such as in a water butt or collection tank, there is Knock Pest Muggenlarven Stop (50 ml). According to the manufacturer, it forms a thin oil film on the water, so larvae cannot breathe at the surface; how often to repeat is stated on the label. Do not use it in water that animals drink. Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
Lamp or repeller
- Mosquito lamp: blue UV light and a scent attract mosquitoes, a fan sucks them into a collection tray. Knock Pest has a 7-watt version and the Muggenlamp Plus; Hofman Pest Control a 7-watt lamp. Place it some distance from where people or animals sit, so mosquitoes are not lured there.
- Mosquito repeller 30 m²: a small mains-powered device with three ultrasonic signal settings, intended for a room of up to 30 m², such as a bedroom or canteen.
Points to note
A mosquito lamp catches some of the mosquitoes, not all of them; a repeller only emits a sound signal. The result depends on the location, the weather and how much breeding water there is nearby. So always combine with clearing standing water. Screens or insect mesh for windows are the simplest way to keep mosquitoes out indoors.
