A disinfectant does little on a floor full of manure and dust: organic dirt binds the product and shields germs. That is why this collection brings together the supplies for both steps: concentrates for cleaning, products and aids for disinfecting afterwards, and the small things that stop you carrying dirt in from outside. Suitable for horse stables, chicken coops, and sheep and goat barns.

Work in four steps

  1. Clear out dry: remove manure, bedding and feed residues, and cobwebs and dust from beams and windows.
  2. Wet clean: soak and scrub with a cleaning concentrate. Stiff Bürsten Walter hygiene brushes get into corners and along joints where a broom glides over.
  3. Rinse and let dry: soap residues can reduce the effect of a disinfectant, and a wet floor dilutes the product.
  4. Disinfect: with an approved product at the dilution and contact time stated on the label.

What you will find in this collection

The range consists of cleaning concentrates and barn hygiene products from brands including Excellent and CID Lines (such as Kenosan), in packs from a few litres to large cans for farms with more animals. For applying powder or sawdust over larger areas, there are the Vink powder and sawdust spreaders.

At the stable entrance, a disinfection mat (55 x 45 cm), disposable overshoes and the ‘Work clothing required’ sign help. That way you make it clear to visitors, the farrier or the vet that they should not walk in wearing street shoes. There is a separate brush set for milking equipment.

How to choose

  • Small stable or coop: a bottle of concentrate and a good brush are usually enough.
  • Several stables or many visitors: consider a disinfection mat and overshoes at the entrance.
  • Spreading over large areas: a spreader gives a more even layer than by hand or with a shovel.

Disinfectants are biocides and may only be sold with an authorisation; in the Netherlands this is granted by the Ctgb, elsewhere by the relevant national authority. Always read the label for the area of use and whether animals may stay in the stable during use.

Points to note and where to look next

When cleaning and disinfecting, wear gloves and, if necessary, eye and respiratory protection; you will find them in safety & protection. Buckets for making up a solution are in buckets & tubs, brooms and shovels in brooms, shovels & rakes. A step-by-step plan is on disinfecting the stable. Back to the overview: stable & yard.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean and disinfect in one go?
Better not. Dirt reduces the effect of most disinfectants, so clean first, rinse and only disinfect once the floor is clean.

Can the animals stay in the stable during disinfection?
That differs per product. The label states whether and when animals may go back into the space.

Where do I put a disinfection mat?
Right at the entrance, so everyone has to walk over it before going into the stable. Keep the mat wet with solution according to the product's directions for use.
