You disinfect a stable or chicken coop in four steps: first clear everything out dry and scrape it down, then wet clean with a cleaner, let it dry, and only then disinfect according to the label. A disinfectant works poorly on manure and dirt, so cleaning beforehand is at least as important as the product itself. You will find something here for every step: Excellent cleaners such as Schoon all-purpose cleaner and Green Clear, Kenosan from CID Lines, Bürsten Walter hygiene brushes, and for the entrance a disinfection mat, boot cleaner, disposable overshoes and signs.

The step-by-step plan

  1. Empty and dry: remove animals, bedding, feed and loose materials. Scrape manure and dirt off the floor, walls and perches.
  2. Soak and wash: wet everything, let the cleaner work and brush or spray the dirt loose. Do not forget corners, seams and drinking systems.
  3. Rinse and dry: rinse away cleaning residues and let the space dry thoroughly, otherwise the remaining water dilutes the disinfectant.
  4. Disinfect: apply the product at the concentration and contact time stated on the label. Then let the space dry or ventilate according to the label before the animals return.

Chicken coop: extra attention to seams

In a chicken coop, red mite hides during the day in cracks, under perches and in nest boxes. If possible, remove perches and nest boxes and treat them separately. Tackling red mite itself, with products and monitoring, is covered in red mite control.

Tools and hygiene at the entrance

A pressure or knapsack sprayer from spraying equipment spreads cleaner and product evenly over walls and ceiling. For bedding and powder, there are the Vink powder spreader and sawdust spreader. A disinfection mat or boot cleaner by the door and a sign such as 'No entry, disinfect first' help prevent germs being brought in from outside. When working with cleaners and disinfectants, wear gloves and eye protection; see safety and protection. For brooms and shovels, see brooms, shovels and rakes, and the full range is under stable cleaning and disinfection.

Frequently asked questions

How do I disinfect a chicken coop?
Take everything out, scrape and wash the coop with a cleaner, let it dry and then apply a disinfectant according to the label. Only let the chickens back in once the coop is dry.

Why clean first and then disinfect?
Manure and dirt shield germs and make many disinfectants less effective. A clean, dry surface is needed for the best result.

How often should I disinfect the stable?
That depends on the farm and the animals. It is often done between two flocks or batches, or after illness. If there is a health problem, consult your vet.
