English Bulldog

Alternative names: Bulldog.

History of the breed

The English Bulldog is one of the most famous and iconic dog breeds. Originally bred in England for bull baiting, this powerful breed has undergone a transformation over the centuries. After these cruel practices were banned, the Bulldog was further bred for its gentle and sociable nature. Today, the English Bulldog is a beloved family dog, but due to its unique build and short muzzle, stricter requirements for responsible breeding are now in place to prevent health problems.

Character and temperament

The English Bulldog is a gentle, loyal, and determined dog. It is sociable and affectionate and enjoys being around its family. Despite its powerful appearance, it has a friendly and calm nature, making it an excellent companion dog. It is often good with children and other pets, although it can be somewhat stubborn, requiring a patient and consistent owner.

Illegally bred

Due to the health problems caused by a short muzzle, strict regulations now apply to breeding English Bulldogs. The muzzle must be at least one-third of the head's length, and the nostrils must be well-open. Furthermore, the dog must not snore while breathing at rest. Breeding dogs that do not meet these requirements is prohibited. Nevertheless, illegal breeding still occurs, and strangely enough, offspring from such breeding practices can still be granted a pedigree.

Important: If you're looking for an English Bulldog puppy, make sure it meets these legal requirements. This reduces the risk of your dog experiencing severe shortness of breath. However, it's best to avoid choosing a dog deliberately bred with a short snout to prevent further health problems.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height: 31-40 cm.
  • Weight: 18-25 kg.
  • Coat: Short, smooth and shiny.
  • Colors: Red, white, brindle and combinations of these.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses:
    • Collar: Neck circumference 40-55 cm (size L).
    • Harness: Chest circumference 50-65 cm (size M/L).

Care

The English Bulldog's short coat is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the skin healthy. Special attention is required for the skin folds, which should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection. Also, check their ears, trim their nails as needed, and ensure good dental care.

Movement and activity

The English Bulldog has low to moderate exercise needs. Short daily walks and quiet playtime are sufficient to keep them healthy. Due to their short muzzle, intensive exercise should be avoided, especially in hot weather, as they can quickly develop respiratory problems and overheat.

Health

The English Bulldog is prone to health problems, mainly due to its short muzzle and unique build:

  • Breathing problems (brachycephalic syndrome)
  • Skin problems, such as infections in skin folds
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems, such as cherry eye
  • Overheating
The average life expectancy is 8-10 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet is essential to prevent obesity, as this puts extra pressure on the joints. An adult Bulldog eats an average of 250-350 grams of food per day, depending on their weight and activity level. Choose food with high-quality ingredients and adjust portions to their needs.

Training and socialization

The English Bulldog is intelligent but can be stubborn, making training challenging. Positive reinforcement and patience are key. Early socialization helps them become confident and interact well with other animals and new situations. Basic obedience training and consistency are important to keep them well-mannered.

Suitability for owners

The English Bulldog is suitable for families and individuals seeking a calm and loyal companion. It's an excellent choice for those who enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and short walks. Due to its sensitivity to heat and health problems, it's less suitable for owners living in warm climates or looking for a very active dog.
