History of the breed

The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, with a history dating back over 2,000 years. Originally bred in China as a guard dog, hunting dog, and even as a sled dog, this breed was especially prized by Chinese emperors and was often depicted in ancient artwork. One of its most distinctive features is its blue tongue, a unique characteristic shared with only a few other breeds. Today, the Chow Chow is primarily kept as a companion dog, although it has retained its alert and independent nature.

Character and temperament

The Chow Chow is independent, reserved, and loyal. Unlike many other companion dogs, it's less clingy and can be quite strong-willed. It's not overly playful, but it bonds strongly with its owner and family. While reserved with strangers, it's not an excessive barker. This breed needs a consistent and patient owner who trains it respectfully.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height: 46-56 cm
  • Weight: 20-32 kg
  • Coat: Thick double coat, long-haired or short-haired
  • Colors: Red, black, blue, cream or cinnamon
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses:
    • Collar: Neck circumference 50-65 cm (size XL)
    • Harness: Chest circumference 75-90 cm (size XL)

Care and shedding

The Chow Chow has a thick, fluffy coat that requires regular grooming. Weekly brushing is necessary to remove tangles and dirt, and daily brushing is recommended during shedding season. The dense undercoat makes it resistant to cold, but can make it prone to overheating in warmer climates.

Movement and activity

Despite its stately appearance, the Chow Chow needs moderate exercise. Daily walks are sufficient to keep it physically and mentally healthy. This breed isn't a fan of intense sports or prolonged physical exertion, but it does enjoy short play sessions.

Barking

The Chow Chow isn't an excessive barker, but it will alert you when it notices something unusual. Its alert nature can make it territorial in certain situations, but it's generally a calm breed.

Good with kids?

The Chow Chow gets along well with children, but they're not a typical playful family dog. They appreciate peace and quiet and may be less tolerant of boisterous, playful children. This breed is better suited for families with older children who will treat them respectfully.

Health

The Chow Chow is prone to some hereditary health problems, including:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Entropion (curling eyelids)
  • Overheating due to its thick coat
  • Thyroid problems

The average life expectancy is 9-15 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet is essential for keeping a Chow Chow healthy. An adult dog eats an average of 400-700 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Overfeeding should be avoided, as this breed is prone to obesity.

Training and socialization

The Chow Chow is intelligent, but also headstrong and independent. It learns quickly but needs a consistent owner who trains calmly and patiently. Early socialization is essential to build confidence and sociability.

Suitability for owners

This breed is suitable for experienced dog owners who appreciate a calm and independent dog. The Chow Chow fits well in a quiet household and requires an owner who understands how to use a confident yet patient approach. It is less suitable for those looking for a playful or affectionate dog.
