Catalan Shepherd

Alternative names: Gos d'Atura Català, Catalan Sheepdog

History of the breed

The Catalan Sheepdog is an ancient herding breed originating in the Catalan Pyrenees in Spain. For centuries, this breed was used to herd and guard sheep and cattle in mountainous regions. Its intelligence and independence allowed it to make independent decisions, making it an excellent working dog. Today, the Catalan Sheepdog is still used as a herding dog, but it is also gaining popularity as a family pet due to its loyal and friendly nature.

Character and temperament

The Catalan Sheepdog is intelligent, energetic, and devoted to its family. It is alert and protective without being aggressive, making it an excellent watchdog. This breed has a strong working drive and can perform tasks independently. It is sociable and friendly, but can sometimes be a little reserved with strangers. Due to its high intelligence and need for mental stimulation, it is easily trained, but it needs a consistent and experienced owner.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height: 45-55 cm
  • Weight: 16-25 kg
  • Coat: Thick, rough coat with a dense undercoat

  • Sizes for collars and harnesses:

Care and shedding

The Catalan Sheepdog has a thick, long coat that requires regular maintenance. Weekly brushing helps remove tangles and dirt, especially during the shedding season when they shed heavily. Their coat offers protection against both cold and heat, but without proper care, it can become matted. Regular ear and nail checks contribute to good overall health.

Movement and activity

This breed has high energy needs and requires plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, dog sports like agility and tracking, and work with a task will keep them from getting bored. The Catalan Sheepdog is not a dog for an inactive owner or a small apartment without sufficient space.

Barking

The Catalan Sheepdog has an average bark and uses its voice primarily as a warning signal. It is naturally alert and will bark if it notices anything suspicious. Excessive barking can be prevented by providing it with sufficient mental stimulation and training.

Good with kids?

This breed is friendly and sociable and gets along well with children. It's playful and protective, making it an excellent family dog. However, its energy level and herding instinct should always be taken into account, especially with young children.

Health

The Catalan Sheepdog is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy
  • Skin problems due to insufficient coat care

The average life expectancy is 12-15 years.

Power supply

Due to its high activity level, the Catalan Sheepdog needs a balanced diet rich in protein and fat. An adult dog eats an average of 400-700 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Divide meals into two portions to ensure a stable energy supply.

Training and socialization

The Catalan Sheepdog is intelligent and eager to learn, making it easily trainable. It requires consistency and learns best through positive reinforcement. Early socialization helps it stay balanced and sociable, especially because it can be naturally alert.

Suitability for owners

This breed is suitable for active and experienced dog owners who are willing to invest a lot of time and energy in exercise and training. It's a good fit for those who enjoy the outdoors and are looking for a dog that can function both as a working dog and a family companion. The Catalan Sheepdog is less suitable for people with an inactive lifestyle or without experience with herding dogs.
