History

The Armant, also known as the Egyptian Shepherd Dog, is a rare breed originating in Egypt. The breed was developed as a working dog, primarily used as a herding dog. It is believed to be a cross between local Egyptian dogs and imported European herding dogs, such as the Briard. While the breed remains popular in Egypt, it is virtually unknown outside the country.

Character and Temperament

The Armant is an energetic, loyal, and protective dog. They are known for their intelligence and adaptability, making them excellent working dogs. They have a strong territorial instinct and can be reserved with strangers, but are loving and devoted to their families. This breed requires an experienced owner who can train them consistently and patiently.

External Features

  • Shoulder height: 55-65 cm

  • Weight: 25-35 kg

  • Coat: Medium length, coarse and dense

  • Color: Black, gray, or a combination of black and white.

  • Neck circumference: 45-55 cm (for collars)

  • Chest circumference: 70-85 cm (for harnesses)

Care

The Armant's coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and dirt. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient. Also, regularly check their ears and teeth, and trim their nails as needed.

Movement and Activity

The Armant needs a lot of exercise. Daily long walks, playtime, and task-oriented activities such as obedience training or herding are essential. They thrive in an active environment and require an owner who can dedicate time to their physical and mental well-being.

Health

The Armant is a relatively healthy breed, but can be susceptible to:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Ear infections. With proper care and regular veterinary visits, they can reach an age of 12-14 years.

Nutrition

A balanced, protein-rich diet is important to support their energy levels. An adult Armant needs an average of 400-600 grams of dog food per day, depending on their activity level. Always provide fresh water.

Training and Socialization

The Armant is intelligent and eager to learn, but can sometimes be stubborn. Early socialization and consistent training are essential to develop a well-adjusted and obedient pet. They respond best to positive reinforcement and clear boundaries.

Suitability for Owners

The Armant is suitable for active and experienced dog owners who spend a lot of time outdoors. They are less suitable for city dwellers or families who have little time for exercise and training. A spacious, fenced garden is ideal to give them sufficient freedom of movement.
