History

Character and Temperament

The American Water Spaniel is energetic, intelligent, and affectionate. They form strong bonds with their families and enjoy being around people. This breed has a curious and playful nature, but can sometimes be stubborn. Early training and socialization are important to promote obedience.

This breed has a high energy level and thrives on daily exercise. Long walks, swims, and fetch games are ideal. They have a work-oriented mentality and enjoy activities such as hunting training or agility exercises.

Health

The American Water Spaniel is generally healthy, but can be susceptible to:

  • Heart problems: With proper care and regular check-ups, they can reach an age of 10-14 years.

Nutrition

A balanced diet with high-quality proteins is essential to support their energy levels. On average, they need 250-400 grams of dog food per day, depending on their activity level. Fresh water should always be available.

Training and Socialization

The American Water Spaniel is eager to learn and responds well to positive reinforcement. They require a consistent but gentle approach to balance their independent nature. Early socialization helps develop a well-adjusted and obedient pet.

Suitability for Owners

This breed is ideal for active families or individuals who can dedicate time and energy to exercise and training. They are less suitable for people who cannot meet their high exercise needs. A house with a garden and access to water is recommended.
