History
The Alano Español is an ancient Spanish dog breed originally used as a working dog on farms and as a hunting dog. The breed takes its name from the Alans, a nomadic people who likely brought these dogs to the Iberian Peninsula. They were used for a variety of tasks, including herding livestock, guarding property, and even in traditional bullfighting. Due to agricultural changes and the ban on bullfighting in Spain, the breed nearly became extinct in the 20th century, but thanks to a few dedicated breeders, it is now experiencing a revival.
Character and temperament
The Alano Español is a loyal, courageous, and powerful dog with a calm and balanced nature. The breed is known for its high tolerance and friendliness toward children, making it an excellent family dog. They are intelligent and learn quickly, but require a consistent and experienced owner due to their independent and sometimes stubborn nature. These dogs bond strongly with their family and are natural protectors, without being overly aggressive.

Care
The Alano Español's short coat is easy to maintain. Weekly brushing is sufficient to remove dead hair and keep the coat in good condition. Check the ears, eyes, and teeth regularly to prevent infections or problems. Although this breed doesn't shed much, shedding can increase during the shedding season.
Movement and activity
The Alano Español is an energetic dog that needs plenty of exercise. Daily long walks, runs, and mental stimulation like tracking or obedience training are essential to keep this dog happy and healthy. They thrive in a house with a large garden or in the countryside.
