In spring two things happen at once: your horse goes back out into the field and he loses his winter coat. This collection brings together what you need for that, from a grazing muzzle to curry combs and grooming blocks, with an explanation of how to adjust gradually to the young grass.

Getting used to the field

Young spring grass can contain a lot of sugar (fructan), especially on sunny days after a cold night. Horses that ate hay all winter are not adjusted to it. So build up turnout time in small steps: start with short periods and extend them slowly over several weeks. If you are unsure how much grazing suits your horse, for example because he puts on weight easily or has had hoof problems before, consult your vet.

Grazing muzzle and herbs

With a grazing muzzle such as The Ultimate Muzzle, your horse can stand and move outside but takes in less grass. You attach the muzzle to a headcollar; there is a version that sits lower on the head for ponies. More on losing weight and low-sugar feeding is in horse on a diet. Excellent Horse Sugar in Balance, a herb blend, is also part of this collection. Read the composition and directions for use on the label and consult your vet before you give it.

Getting the winter coat out

For moulting there are rubber curry combs from Vplast in two sizes, curry combs with sweat scraper, the Grooming Block and the Massage & Egg remover. Work first with the curry comb in circles and then sweep away the loose hair. Detailed tips are in moulting: curry combs and coat brushes.

Points to note

All other items for horses and ponies are under everything for your horse.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can my horse go out all day again in spring?
Build up turnout time over several weeks, from short to long. If you are unsure what suits your horse, consult your vet.

When does grass contain the most sugar?
Especially on sunny days after cold nights and during rapid growth in spring. Grazing in the early morning therefore often means less sugar than in the afternoon.

Should I groom my horse differently in spring?
During moulting he sheds a lot more hair. Use a rubber curry comb and a sweat scraper more often, and clean your brushes after every session.
