With a curry comb, two brushes and a hoof pick, you can get any horse looking tidy. What you add after that depends on your horse and how much time you have. This collection contains grooming tools: from the rubber curry comb to the fine finishing brush and the bag to keep it all in.
Grooming in four steps
- Loosening with a curry comb in small circles over the muscled areas. Vplast makes the Roskam Original in 130 x 65 and 180 x 90 mm; the Excellent Horse Flexi Brush Curry Comb is a flexible version. Skip the head and legs.
- Flicking away with a hard brush, in the direction of the hair.
- Finishing with a soft brush, also for the head and legs. Excellent Horse has, among others, the Flexi Brush Soft, the Grooming Brush in M and L, the Supreme Brush and the Wave Brush.
- Details: a sponge for eyes and nose, a mane comb and the hoof pick.
Useful extras
- Sweat scraper to draw water out of the coat after washing, one-handed or two-handed from Vplast.
- Grooming Block to pick up loose hair and dust, especially during the moult.
- Massage brush, such as the Flexi Brush Massage or a brush with magnet.
- Grooming bag from Covalliero or a complete seven-piece grooming set in a backpack.
For children who look after their own pony, there is the Excellent Horse Grooming Set Junior and a Fun curry comb with sweat scraper.
How do you choose a brush?
Look at stiffness, size and grip. A thick winter coat needs stiffer bristles than a thin, clipped summer coat. Small hands work more comfortably with size M; an L brush covers a large horse faster. A brush with a hand strap or loop does not slip away when your hand is wet.
Points to note
Preferably use your kit for one horse and wash it regularly, especially if a skin problem is going round the yard. Do not use a curry comb on bony areas, because it hurts there.

Frequently asked questions
Which brushes do I need at minimum?
A curry comb, a hard brush, a soft brush and a hoof pick. A mane comb and sponge complete the set.
What do you do with a sweat scraper?
After washing, or with a sweaty horse, you use it to draw excess water out of the coat, so it dries faster.
How do I clean brushes?
Knock them out against the curry comb or a wall, and wash them now and then in lukewarm water with a little soap. Let them dry with the bristles facing down.
