A fly mask keeps flies and horseflies away from the eyes and ears of your horse or pony while he is out in the field. There are three types here: the Zebra Fly Mask with ear protection, a headcollar with an integrated fly mask and a fly fringe browband that you attach to the bridle or headcollar. The masks come in the sizes Pony, Cob and Full.
Which type suits your horse?
- Zebra Fly Mask: light, tear-resistant mesh with ear protection, hook-and-loop fastening and an elastic strap for the fit. Matches the look of the zebra fly rug.
- Headcollar with integrated fly mask: fine mesh with ear protection, attached to a headcollar, so the mask shifts less easily. A stretchy Lycra section at the nose and an adjustable headpiece and noseband make it fit well. Handy for horses that rub a loose mask off their head.
- Fly fringe browband: fringes on hook-and-loop fastening that shield the eyes while riding or walking. Supplied without headcollar.
Choosing the size
Pony is for small heads, Cob for lighter breeds and large ponies, Full for an average warmblood. A good mask does not rest on the eyes, leaves room at the ears and closes under the jaw so that no flies crawl underneath, but nothing pinches either. If in doubt, measure your horse's head and compare with the size of his current headcollar.
Points to note
Take the mask off at least once a day to check eyes and skin, and remove sand and flies from the mesh. Clean it regularly, because a dirty mask rubs. A headcollar in the field can get caught on something; so only choose the version with headcollar if you see your horse every day. If you see anything around the eyes that worries you, consult your vet.
Together with the mask, you often use a fly rug or sweet itch rug and fly spray. More on insects in stable and field is in flies, horseflies and ticks. All headcollars and rugs are in headcollars, rugs and fly masks.
Frequently asked questions
Can a horse see with a fly mask on?
Yes, your horse can see out normally through the fine mesh. Do let him get used to it in the stable before you turn him out with it.
Can a fly mask stay on overnight?
Many owners take the mask off in the evening, when the flies are less active. This gives skin and eyes a rest and lets you check them straight away.
What is the difference between a fly mask and a fly fringe browband?
A mask covers the eyes and ears and is for use in the field. A browband fringe attaches to the bridle and is intended for use while riding.
