A horse is made to eat small amounts of fibrous feed for almost the whole day. Long gaps between feeds, a lot of hard feed at once, stress and eating off sandy ground put the digestive system under pressure. Here you will find complementary feeds that owners use to support the stomach and gut.

Psyllium and horses on sand

If your horse is kept on a sandy paddock or a field with bare grass, it takes in some sand with every mouthful. Psyllium forms a gel-like mass in the gut and many owners feed it as a course. Prevention is even more important: feed hay in a net, rack or feeder instead of on the ground, and lay a rubber mat under the feeding spot. Feeders and racks are in stable and field.

Feeding the way a horse eats

Give enough forage spread over the day, divide hard feed into several small meals and do not switch hay or hard feed abruptly. A slow feeder helps shorten long periods without feed. This basis does more for the stomach and gut than any tub.

Points to note

Stomach and gut supplements are not a treatment. With signs of colic, such as rolling, looking at the belly, not eating or passing no droppings, call the vet immediately. With persistent loose droppings or weight loss, first have the cause investigated. Store probiotics according to the pack, because live cultures are sensitive to heat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?
Probiotics contain live micro-organisms. Prebiotics are nutrients, such as certain fibres, that feed the existing gut flora.

How often do you give psyllium?
Many owners feed it as a course for a limited period, a few times a year. Stick to the product's directions for use and consult your vet if in doubt.

When should I call the vet about abdominal pain?
Immediately. Colic can become serious quickly; do not wait and do not give anything without consulting.
