Your horse wears a headcollar more often than any other piece of equipment: for grooming, on the trailer, to the field and back. This page brings together headcollars and lead ropes, rugs and headcollars with a fly mask, so you find everything that goes around your horse's head and body in one place.

Three lines of Excellent headcollars

Excellent makes three series of headcollars: Essential, Premium and Superior. Each series comes in five colours (blue, grey, red, pink and black) and in sizes XS, S, M, L and XL. To match, there are the Exclusive Reflective lead ropes in the same colours, which reflect light and so stand out when you walk to the field at dusk. For horses that are difficult to lead, there is a 250 cm lead with chain, and a separate trigger clip to replace a worn clip.

Choosing the right size

A well-fitting headcollar sits just below the cheekbone, with room for two fingers between noseband and nose. Too loose, and your horse can catch a leg or hoof behind the noseband; too tight, and it presses on the sensitive parts of the head. Measure before you order and compare with the size chart for the product. If you are between two sizes, choose the size where the buckles are not on the last hole.

Rugs are sized by length. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the shoulder and flank, to behind the buttocks. The Sweat/Fleece rug in size 135/185 cm is suitable for putting over a sweaty horse after work, so it does not get chilled while it dries.

Headcollars with fly mask

A headcollar with an integrated fly mask combines two things: your horse is easy to catch in the field and its eyes and ears are protected from flies. This version comes in Pony, Cob and Full. If you want to protect the whole body, also look at the fly rugs on flies, horseflies and ticks.

Storage and points to note

Hang headcollars on a Vplast hook after use, so they do not disappear into the straw. A sorting ring with hook keeps several headcollars together. Preferably do not let a horse wear an ordinary headcollar in the field unsupervised; choose a headcollar with a safety breakaway point if you feel it is necessary. Regularly check the leather or nylon for small tears at buckles and rings.

The range of rugs is currently limited; for turnout and winter rugs, this is not yet a complete section. Explore further at grooming and care, stable and field equipment and equipment for the rider. Back to the overview: everything for your horse.

Frequently asked questions

What headcollar size does my pony need?
That depends on the head, not the breed. Measure the circumference over the nose and behind the ears and compare with the size chart for the product; XS and S are the smallest sizes.

What is the difference between Essential, Premium and Superior?
They are three Excellent series in the same colours and sizes. You can read about the differences in design and finish on each product.

What do you use a sweat rug for?
After riding or washing, you put it over a warm or wet horse. The fabric wicks moisture away, so your horse dries without getting chilled.

Can a horse wear a headcollar in the field?
Preferably not unsupervised, because it can get caught. If it must, choose a headcollar with a breakaway point and check your horse daily.
