Command Roll Over

"Roll Over" is a playful and dynamic trick where your dog rolls over the floor several times. It's an extension of "Rolling Over" and a fun exercise to improve your dog's flexibility, coordination, and obedience. This trick is a real crowd-pleaser!

How to Teach Your Dog to Roll Over

  1. Start with "Roll Over": Make sure your dog has already mastered the "Roll Over" command. This will form the foundation for "Roll Over."
  2. Use a reward: Hold a treat or toy close to your dog's nose to get his attention.
  3. Give the command: Clearly say "Roll over" and guide the movement by moving the treat in a circular motion. Entice your dog to continue rolling after completing the first roll.
  4. Reward after each roll: Use a marker signal such as "Yes" or "Good boy" and give a treat after each roll he performs on command.
  5. Reward only on command: Make sure you only reward your dog when he rolls over after you say "Roll over." If he starts rolling over on his own without your cue, don't reward him.
  6. Practice multiple rolls: Gradually increase the number of rolls in a row and reward at the end of the series.

Tips for success

  • Start small: Start with one or two rolls and slowly expand as your dog gains more control.
  • Use an upbeat tone: Keep your voice positive and enthusiastic to motivate your dog.
  • Be patient: It may take a while for your dog to understand that he needs to roll over multiple times. Reward every little improvement.
  • Introduce variation: Once your dog has mastered "Roll Over," you can combine the trick with other skills, such as "Stay" or "Play Dead."

Why is 'Roll Over' important?

Rolling over is a fun and physical exercise that improves your dog's coordination and helps them develop body awareness. It's also a great way to have fun together and strengthen your bond.

Troubleshooting during training

  • Does your dog only roll once? Reward him for that attempt and use an extra-attractive treat to entice him to keep going.
  • Is he distracted? Practice in a quiet environment and minimize distractions until he understands the trick.
  • Is he struggling with multiple roles? Practice gradually and reward each additional role to encourage him.
