Command Balance

"Balance on an Object" is a challenging and impressive trick that strengthens your dog's physical and mental skills. This trick requires concentration, coordination, and self-confidence and is perfect for keeping your dog physically and mentally fit.

How do you teach your dog to 'balance on an object'?

  1. Choose a safe object: Use a sturdy and stable object, such as a low plank, a wobble board, or a soft ball with a non-slip surface. Make sure the object isn't too high or unstable.
  2. Get your dog used to it: Let your dog explore the object and get used to it before letting them step onto it. Reward them for curiosity and calm behavior.
  3. Use a reward: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose and slowly guide him toward the object.
  4. Give the command: Say "Balance" or another word of your choice as you guide your dog to the object. As soon as he steps on it, reward him immediately.
  5. Build trust: Reward your dog for placing one paw, then two, until they're fully on the object. Use a marker signal like "Yes" or "Good."
  6. Practice balance: Once your dog is standing comfortably, encourage them to stay still and maintain their balance. Reward them for each successful attempt.
  7. Add variety: Once your dog has mastered the trick, you can increase the difficulty by making the surface a little more unstable (like a ball or balance platform).

Tips for success

  • Start small: Use a low, stable object before moving on to more challenging surfaces.
  • Keep it safe: Make sure the object has a non-slip surface and practice on a soft surface to prevent injuries.
  • Make it fun: Reward your dog enthusiastically and keep the training playful.
  • Work on short sessions: Avoid frustration by breaking training into short, positive sessions.

Why is 'Keeping Balance on an Object' important?
