Russian Black Terrier
Black Russian Terrier
- Alternative names: Russian Black Terrier, Chornyi Terrier.
History of the breed
The Black Russian Terrier is a relatively young breed developed in the Soviet Union in the 1940s and 1950s. It was originally bred by the Red Star Kennel, a military research center, to create a robust and versatile working dog. Crossbreeding with breeds such as the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier, and other working dogs resulted in the Black Russian Terrier. This breed was used for guarding and military duties and is known today for its loyalty and versatility.
Character and temperament
The Black Russian Terrier is an intelligent, courageous, and confident dog. It is loyal and protective of its family and has a natural alertness. This breed is sociable and friendly with acquaintances, but reserved with strangers. It is gentle and patient with children, but due to its strong and sometimes dominant nature, it requires consistent training.

The Black Russian Terrier's double coat requires regular grooming. Weekly brushing prevents tangles and removes dirt. Professional grooming sessions are recommended to keep its coat in top condition. Regularly check its ears, eyes, and nails, and ensure good dental care. Due to its large size, it's important to check its paws and joints.
Movement and activity
The Black Russian Terrier is an energetic breed that needs plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, runs, and mental challenges, such as obedience training or dog sports, are essential for keeping them physically and mentally healthy. They have a strong work ethic and thrive on tasks or assignments that keep them engaged.
Health
The Black Russian Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
- Thyroid problems
The average life expectancy is 10-12 years.
Power supply
A balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins and healthy fats is important. An adult Black Russian Terrier eats an average of 500-800 grams of food per day, depending on their weight and activity level. Divide the food into two meals to prevent digestive problems.
Training and socialization
The Black Russian Terrier is intelligent and eager to learn, but its strong character requires an experienced owner. Positive reinforcement and a consistent, gentle approach work best. Early socialization is essential to ensure it feels comfortable in various situations and interacts well with other animals and people.
Suitability for owners
The Black Russian Terrier is perfect for experienced dog owners who have the time and knowledge to manage its powerful and intelligent nature. It makes an excellent family dog and watchdog, but requires a confident owner willing to invest time in exercise, training, and grooming. This breed is ideal for those with a large garden or access to outdoor space where it can expend its energy. It is less suitable for apartments or owners who spend little time at home, as it requires a lot of attention and interaction. The Black Russian Terrier is a loyal and protective companion that thrives in an active and stable environment.
