Frisian Stabyhoun

Alternative names: Stabyhoun, Stabijhoun.

History of the breed

The Frisian Stabyhoun is one of the national treasures of the Netherlands and originates from Friesland. This versatile breed was originally used as a hunting dog, guard dog, and family companion. The name "Stabijhoun" literally means "standby dog" in Frisian, emphasizing its loyalty and versatility. With its excellent tracking ability and gentle nature, the Frisian Stabyhoun is now a beloved family dog and an excellent companion for active people.

Character and temperament

The Frisian Stabyhoun is friendly, gentle, and intelligent. It is sociable and loyal to its family, making it an excellent family dog. This breed is eager to learn and enjoys cooperation, but can also have an independent side. It gets along well with children and other pets, provided it is properly socialized. Because of its hunting instinct, early training and guidance are important.

Movement and activity

The Frisian Stabyhoun is an active dog with moderate to high exercise needs. Long walks, playtime in the yard, and activities like tracking, retrieving, or dog sports are ideal for keeping them physically and mentally stimulated. Without sufficient exercise, they can become bored and exhibit unwanted behavior.

Health

The Frisian Stabyhoun is a healthy breed, but can be prone to:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Epilepsy
The average life expectancy is 12-14 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet is essential for the Frisian Stabyhoun. An adult dog eats an average of 250-400 grams of food per day, depending on its weight, age, and activity level. Choose a food with high-quality proteins and healthy fats, and divide meals into two portions to promote digestion.

Training and socialization

The Frisian Stabyhoun is intelligent and eager to learn, making it a relatively easy breed to train. It responds well to positive reinforcement and enjoys varied training. Early socialization helps it become comfortable in new situations and prevents fear or unwanted behavior. Training focused on obedience and tracking is well-suited to its natural abilities.

Suitability for owners

The Frisian Stabyhoun is ideal for active families or individuals who want to invest time and energy in exercise, training, and interaction. It's a good fit for those who enjoy hiking, sports, or other outdoor activities. However, its sociable and energetic nature makes it less suitable for those short on time or those looking for a calm dog.
