Origin & history

The Finnish Spitz is the national dog breed of Finland and is considered one of the oldest Scandinavian hunting dogs. It was used for centuries by Finnish hunters and the Sami people for hunting birds, squirrels, and even moose.

His unique hunting method — “bark pointing,” where he locates game and uses a series of specific barks to lead the hunter to the prey — made him indispensable in the vast Finnish forests.

When the breed nearly became extinct in the 19th century due to crossbreeding with other dogs, it was revived and standardized thanks to dedicated breeders in Finland. Today, the Finnish Spitz is known as an intelligent, proud, and lively dog, both an excellent hunting companion and a charming family pet.

Appearance & body shape

The Finnish Spitz is a medium-sized, elegant dog with a compact build and a characteristic fox-like appearance. Its demeanor is alert, proud, and full of energy.

The coat is double-layered and weather-resistant: a soft undercoat with a straight, slightly harsh outer coat. The color is usually deep red to golden, giving it a warm, vibrant appearance.

The tail curls gracefully over the back, the ears are pointed and erect, and the eyes have a lively, intelligent look.

Format

  • Males: 44–50 cm height at the withers

  • Bitches: 39–45 cm height at the withers

  • Weight: 10–15 kg

Character & temperament

The Finnish Spitz is lively, intelligent, and proud. It has a strong hunting instinct and an independent spirit, but is also loyal and devoted to its family.

He is alert, curious, and watchful, making him an excellent yard and alarm dog. Despite his vigilance, he is not aggressive—rather reserved with strangers, but friendly with acquaintances.

The Finnish Spitz is intelligent, but also headstrong. He learns quickly, as long as training is positive, consistent, and varied. He dislikes harsh corrections but enjoys working with a respectful owner.

Good with children and other pets

The Finnish Spitz is generally good with children, especially if raised with them. They are playful, friendly, and alert, but their independence can make them less patient with very young or pushy children.

He's best suited to families that offer peace, structure, and respectful interaction. Busy households with little time or small children are less suitable for this breed, as the Finnish Spitz thrives on attention and involvement.

He generally gets along well with other dogs, but he can be territorial toward dominant males. Small pets can trigger his hunting instincts, so socialization is important.

In short: a wonderful companion dog for experienced or quiet families who appreciate its character.

Movement & care

The Finnish Spitz is an active and energetic dog that needs daily exercise. It enjoys walks, running, and tracking, and benefits from mental stimulation.

While not hyperactive, he's not a dog for a sedentary life: he thrives with active owners who enjoy the outdoors. He can run freely off-leash, provided his hunting instincts are kept under control.

The coat is relatively easy to maintain: weekly brushing is sufficient, except during the shedding season, when it can shed considerably. The coat is self-cleaning and rarely needs washing.

Health

The Finnish Spitz is a healthy and strong breed with a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Well-known points of interest are:

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

  • Epilepsy (in some lines)

  • Tartar due to insufficient dental care

In general, however, this breed is hardy and resistant to cold and exertion.

Difference with similar breeds

The Finnish Spitz resembles other northern spitzes, such as the Norwegian Lundehund or the Swedish Spitz, but is distinguished by its bright red coat and unique barking style while hunting.

He is somewhat more refined and sensitive than the Siberian or Japanese Spitz breeds, with a stronger bond with his owner and a gentler nature.

Summary

The Finnish Spitz is a proud, intelligent, and independent dog with a warm heart. He's lively, loyal, and full of character—a true personality that demands respect and gives love in return.

For families who love nature, peace and quiet and a dog with a mind of its own, the Finnish Spitz is a special companion: elegant, intelligent and tirelessly loyal.
