Perro de Presa Canario, Canary Dog, Canary Mastiff

Origin & history

The Dogo Canario is an impressive, powerful breed originating from the Canary Islands, specifically Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Its name literally means "Canarian catch dog."

The breed originated in the 16th and 17th centuries from local shepherd and guard dogs crossed with imported Molosser dogs (such as Mastiffs and Bulldogs) brought by Spanish colonists. The Dogo Canario was used to guard livestock, hunt stray cattle, and protect the property from intruders.

Although once used in dog fighting, this practice was banned in the 20th century. Thanks to targeted breeding programs and stricter regulations, the breed regained its original function as a guard dog and loyal protector of the family.

Today, the Dogo Canario is officially recognized by the FCI under the name Presa Canario and is a symbol of strength, loyalty and balance.

Appearance & body shape

The Dogo Canario is a large, imposing dog with a robust, muscular build. Its body is compact, sturdy, and full of energy—built for strength and agility.

The coat is short, coarse, and dense, with colors ranging from brindle to fawn or gray, often with a black muzzle. The skin is thick and elastic, providing protection during work or fighting.

His broad chest, powerful neck and strong jaws give him an impressive appearance, but his eyes betray intelligence and calmness.

Format

  • Males: 60–66 cm height at the withers, 45–65 kg

  • Bitches: 56–62 cm height at the withers, 40–55 kg

Character & temperament

The Dogo Canario is confident, courageous, and loyal. He is naturally vigilant and protective, without unnecessary aggression. His calm, composed nature makes him a reliable protector and a devoted companion.

He forms a strong bond with his family and is gentle with people he knows. He can be reserved with strangers, making him an excellent watchdog. His protective instinct runs deep, but he is intelligent enough to assess situations—provided he is properly trained and socialized.

The Dogo Canario needs a clear leader: someone who provides confident, consistent, and respectful guidance. When given structure, exercise, and attention, it's a loyal, stable, and affectionate dog that fits perfectly into family life.

Movement & care

The Dogo Canario is active and needs daily exercise to maintain both physical and mental balance. Long walks, obedience training, or draft work are ideal for this powerful breed.

Because of their size and strength, a well-trained Dogo is important — young dogs need controlled exercise to keep their joints healthy.

The short coat requires little maintenance: weekly brushing and occasional bathing are sufficient. Its skin folds and ears should be checked regularly to prevent irritation.

Health

The Dogo Canario is generally a strong and robust breed, with a life expectancy of 9 to 11 years.

Points of attention are:

  • Hip dysplasia (HD)

  • Elbow dysplasia (ED)

  • Gastric dilation (bloat)

  • Skin problems due to insufficient care or poor nutrition

A balanced diet, regular exercise and good breeding contribute to a long, healthy life.

Difference with similar breeds

The Dogo Canario is often confused with the Dogo Argentino, but there are clear differences:

  • The Dogo Argentino is white and lighter built, bred for hunting;

  • The Dogo Canario is brindle or sandy colored, heavier and more oriented towards guarding.

In character, the Dogo Canario is somewhat calmer, more thoughtful, and more focused on its territory. It combines the dignity of a Mastiff with the intelligence of a herding dog.

Summary

The Dogo Canario is a proud, powerful, and loyal protector. He is well-balanced, intelligent, and devoted to his family, but requires an experienced owner who offers respect and clear guidance.

With proper training, the Dogo Canario is a reliable family dog — calm, watchful, and loyal — a true protector with a noble character.
