History of the English Cocker Spaniel
The English Cocker Spaniel is one of the oldest and most beloved spaniel breeds. Its origins date back to 14th-century England, where it was bred as a hunting dog for tracking and retrieving feathered game. The name "Cocker" comes from its specialization in hunting woodcock.
In the 19th century, the English Cocker Spaniel was distinguished from other spaniel breeds and further refined into the breed we know today. Despite its hunting heritage, it has developed into a wonderful family dog, thanks to its playful, friendly, and affectionate nature.
Character and temperament
The English Cocker Spaniel is known for its lively, intelligent, and gentle nature. This breed is enthusiastic, energetic, and sociable, making it a good fit for an active family.
- Very friendly and loving: He bonds strongly with his family and enjoys human contact.
- Cheerful and playful: Always up for a game or a long walk.
- Sensitive and intelligent: He learns quickly, but needs a gentle, patient approach.
- Social with people and other animals: Generally good with children and other pets.
Because they quickly become attached to their owners, they can struggle with being alone. This breed isn't suitable for people who have to leave them alone for long periods of time.
Physical characteristics
The English Cocker Spaniel is a compact, muscular and graceful dog, with a characteristic wavy coat and long, velvety ears.
- Height at the withers: Males: 39-41 cm, females: 38-39 cm
- Weight: Males: 13-16 kg, females: 12-15 kg
- Coat: Long, silky and slightly wavy
- Color: A wide variety, including black, gold, red, blue roan, liver, and tricolor

A collar with a neck circumference of 35-45 cm is suitable. A well-fitting harness with a chest circumference of 50-60 cm is ideal.
Care
The English Cocker Spaniel has medium to high grooming needs due to its long, silky coat.
- Daily brushing prevents tangles and keeps the coat clean.
- Regular trimming (every 6-8 weeks) is recommended to keep the coat in top condition.
- Ear care is essential, as long ears are prone to dirt and infections.
- Brush your teeth regularly to prevent tartar and bad breath.
Because Cockers love water, they can often come home wet and muddy. A towel by the door is therefore a good idea!
Movement and activity
The English Cocker Spaniel is an active dog with a lot of energy. He needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy.
- At least 60 minutes of exercise per day is recommended.
- Long walks, playing and running keep him fit.
- Retrieving games and tracking activities suit his hunting instinct perfectly.
- Swimming is a favourite pastime of many Cockers.
Health
The English Cocker Spaniel is generally a healthy breed, but can be prone to certain hereditary conditions. The average life expectancy is between 12 and 15 years.
Common health problems:
- Ear Infections: Due to their long, drooping ears, regular checking is necessary.
- Hip dysplasia: A joint problem more common in medium-sized dogs.
- Eye problems: Such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataract.
- Allergies: They may be sensitive to skin and food allergies.
Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet help prevent many problems.
Power supply
A good diet is essential to support the energy and coat condition of the English Cocker Spaniel.
Recommended daily amount:
- 200-400 grams of dry food per day, depending on weight and activity.
- A diet high in quality proteins and healthy fats will support his energy levels.
- Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids contribute to healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Training and socialization
The English Cocker Spaniel is intelligent, enthusiastic, and eager to learn, but can also be stubborn. Positive training techniques work best.
- Start socialization early to prevent fear or uncertainty.
- Use rewards and games to make training fun and effective.
- Keep the training varied, as Cockers can become bored quickly.
- Work on obedience, especially recall, as he is easily distracted by smells.
Because of his sensitive nature, he doesn't respond well to harsh corrections. A gentle, consistent approach is most effective.
