Other names
- Cockerdoodle
- Spoodle
History of the Cockapoo
The Cockapoo is one of the first "designer dogs" and originated in the United States in the 1950s by crossing a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. The goal was to create a friendly, intelligent, and hypoallergenic family dog with the best qualities of both breeds.
The Cockapoo is now beloved worldwide for its playful nature and soft, curly coat. Although not yet officially recognized as a breed by the major kennel clubs, it has earned a permanent place in many homes.
Character and temperament

Care
Due to its Poodle heritage, the Cockapoo often has a curly or wavy coat that requires regular maintenance to prevent tangles.
- Weekly brushing is necessary, more often if the coat is thick or curly.
- Professional grooming is recommended to keep the coat in good condition.
- Ear checking is important because the drooping ears are prone to infections.
- Regular brushing of your teeth prevents tartar and bad breath.
Movement and activity
The Cockapoo has moderate to high energy needs and enjoys both physical and mental challenge.
- At least 30-60 minutes of exercise every day.
- Long walks, playing and running keep him happy.
- Intelligent games such as puzzles and scent games are ideal.
- Dog sports such as agility and tracking are good outlets.
Health
Cockapoos are generally healthy dogs, but can be prone to hereditary conditions from their parent breeds.
- Hip dysplasia: A common problem in medium-sized dogs.
- Ear infections: Because of their drooping ears.
- Patellar luxation: Knee problems that are more common in small breeds.
- Eye problems: Such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
Regular veterinary checkups and a healthy diet contribute to a long and healthy life.
Power supply
A well-balanced diet helps the Cockapoo stay energetic and healthy.
Recommended daily amount:
- 150-300 grams of high-quality dry food per day, depending on size and activity.
- A combination of dry and wet food can help to provide variety in the diet.
- Pay attention to portion control, as Cockapoos have a tendency to become overweight.
