History of the Cirneco dell'Etna

The Cirneco dell'Etna is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world and has a long history dating back thousands of years. This breed originates from the Italian island of Sicily and is primarily associated with the volcanic region around Mount Etna. Depictions of dogs that strongly resemble the Cirneco can be found on ancient coins and mosaics from the Phoenician and Roman periods.

Originally, the Cirneco was used as a hunting dog for small game, such as rabbits and hares, in the rugged and rocky terrain of Sicily. The dog is known for its exceptional speed, endurance, and acute senses, particularly its sense of smell. Despite its centuries-old history, the breed was not officially recognized in Italy until 1939, and later internationally by the FCI.

Character and temperament

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a gentle, intelligent, and energetic dog. It is devoted to its owner and has a highly developed hunting instinct. This breed is friendly and sociable, but can be somewhat reserved with strangers.

Thanks to its high intelligence, the Cirneco is easy to train, but it also has an independent side. This means a consistent and patient approach is required during training. Although it was once primarily used as a hunting dog, its affectionate nature now makes it a wonderful family dog.

The Cirneco dell'Etna is playful and cheerful and thrives in an environment with plenty of attention and exercise. It loves spending time with its family and gets along well with children and other dogs, provided it is properly socialized from an early age.

Physical characteristics

The Cirneco dell'Etna has a lean, athletic build and resembles a Pharaoh Hound in appearance. It is graceful and swift, with a look perfectly suited to its original purpose as a hunting dog.

  • Height at the withers: Males: 46-50 cm, females: 42-46 cm
  • Weight: Males: 10-12 kg, females: 8-10 kg
  • Coat: Short, smooth and dense
  • Color: Usually light brown to reddish brown, sometimes with white markings
  • Build: Slender, muscular and elegant
  • Ears: Large, erect and alert

A collar with a neck circumference of 30-40 cm is suitable. A well-fitting harness with a chest circumference of 50-60 cm is ideal for this breed.

Care

The Cirneco dell'Etna has a low-maintenance coat. Weekly brushing with a soft brush or grooming mitt helps remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. More frequent brushing may be necessary during shedding seasons.

Other important care points:

  • Ears: Check the ears weekly for dirt and infections, especially since the ears are large and open.
  • Nails: Should be trimmed regularly if they do not wear down naturally.
  • Teeth: Brush at least a few times a week to prevent tartar.

Movement and activity

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a very active dog with a high need for exercise. This breed is not for those looking for a quiet house dog. It enjoys long walks, running, and playing. Because of its hunting instincts, it's important to let it run off-leash in safe areas or use a long leash.

Ideal activities for the Cirneco:

  • Long walks and hikes
  • Running next to the bike
  • Agility training and dog sports
  • Search and find games

Health

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a robust and healthy breed with a long life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. There are no known hereditary conditions common to this breed, but as with all dogs, it's important to watch for common health problems such as:

  • Dental problems: Due to the small jaw, tartar and dental problems can occur.
  • Joint problems: Joint problems can occur in older dogs, especially if they become overweight.
  • Allergies: Sometimes sensitive to skin allergies or food intolerances.

Regular check-ups at the vet help to identify potential problems early.

Power supply

A balanced diet is essential for the Cirneco dell'Etna's health and energy levels. Because this is an active breed, it needs a diet rich in protein and healthy fats.

Recommended daily amount:

  • 150-250 grams of dry food per day, depending on age and activity.
  • Small dog food kibble is often best for this breed.
  • Both pressed and crunchy chunks can be suitable.

Training and socialization

The Cirneco dell'Etna is intelligent and learns quickly, but can also be stubborn. Positive reinforcement works best with this breed. Because it's a hunting dog, proper recall training is important before letting it run free.

Key training points:

  • Start socialization early, especially with other dogs and people.
  • Reward good behavior with treats or play.
  • Avoid harsh corrections as this can be counterproductive.

Suitability for owners

✅ Active owners who love exercise
✅ People with experience in dog training
✅ Families with older children
❌ People looking for a calm dog
❌ Owners without time for long walks
