Chongqing Dog
Alternative names: Chinese Chongqing Dog, East Sichuan Dog
History of the breed
The Chongqing Dog is an ancient Chinese breed originating from the Chongqing region and eastern Sichuan. This breed has existed since the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), as evidenced by archaeological finds and artwork from that period. Originally, it was used as a hunting and guard dog, particularly in the mountainous regions of Sichuan. Due to urbanization and the Cultural Revolution in China, the number of Chongqing Dogs declined dramatically. Today, the breed is rare, and efforts are being made to preserve it.
Character and temperament
The Chongqing Dog is a courageous, intelligent, and loyal dog. It is vigilant and protective of its family, making it an excellent watchdog. This breed is naturally reserved with strangers, but very devoted to its owner. It has a strong prey drive and an independent personality, requiring a consistent and experienced owner.

Care and shedding
The Chongqing Dog has a short, coarse coat that requires little maintenance. Weekly brushing is sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. This breed sheds moderately and has minimal odor. Regular checks of the ears, teeth, and nails help prevent health problems.
Movement and activity
The Chongqing Dog is energetic and needs daily exercise to stay happy. Long walks, tracking, and obedience training are excellent ways to keep him physically and mentally stimulated. Due to his hunting instincts, he should be kept on a leash in unfenced areas.
Barking
This breed is alert and uses its deep, loud bark to alert its owner to suspicious situations. It doesn't bark without reason, but it can be vocal if it senses something suspicious.
Good with kids?
The Chongqing Dog gets along well with children within its family, provided it is well-socialized. Because of its protective nature, it's important to teach young children how to treat it respectfully. Supervision is recommended with young children.
Health
Although the Chongqing Dog is generally a healthy breed, some health conditions may occur, such as:
- Skin problems due to its thin coat
- Joint problems, such as hip dysplasia
- Overheating in extremely hot weather
The average life expectancy is 12-14 years.
Power supply
A balanced diet with high-quality proteins and fats is important to keep the Chongqing Dog in good condition. An adult dog eats an average of 300-500 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Fresh drinking water should always be available.
Training and socialization
This breed is intelligent and eager to learn, but can be stubborn. Consistent and patient training is essential for them to thrive in a family. Early socialization with people and other animals helps balance their protective tendencies.
Suitability for owners
The Chongqing Dog is suitable for experienced dog owners who understand how to train an independent and alert dog. It thrives in active households and needs ample space. This breed is less suitable for apartments or for people with limited time for training and exercise.
