History of the breed

The Chippiparai is a sighthound native to the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Historically, this breed was bred by royal families and landowners to hunt game such as hare and deer. It is known for its speed, endurance, and keen senses. It is believed the Chippiparai is related to other sighthounds such as the Saluki and the Sloughi, which explains its athletic build and hunting instincts.

Character and temperament

The Chippiparai is an independent and loyal dog with a strong bond with its owner. It is intelligent and energetic, but also has an independent side, which can make training challenging. This breed is naturally reserved with strangers, but very affectionate within its family. Its hunting instinct and speed make it best suited for an active owner who will keep it stimulated both physically and mentally.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height: 60-70 cm
  • Weight: 15-20 kg
  • Coat: Short, dense coat
  • Colors: Usually fawn, but can also be black, silver, or brindle
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses:
    • Collar: Neck circumference 35-45 cm (size M)
    • Harness: Chest circumference 55-70 cm (size M)

Care and shedding

The Chippiparai has a short, smooth coat that requires little maintenance. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. This breed sheds minimally, making it suitable for those looking for a dog with minimal shedding. Regular ear, teeth, and nail checks are important for good overall health.

Movement and activity

As a true sighthound, the Chippiparai has high exercise needs. Bred for running, it needs plenty of space and activity every day. Long walks, runs, and play sessions in a safe, fenced environment help keep it healthy and happy.

Barking

The Chippiparai is generally not a noisy dog. It only barks when it notices something suspicious or to warn its owner. This makes it an excellent watchdog without being overly vocal.

Good with kids?

With proper socialization, the Chippiparai gets along well with children. It's playful and protective, but due to its speed and prey drive, supervision is necessary around younger children.

Health

The Chippiparai is a strong and healthy breed, but can be prone to:

  • Joint problems due to his slender build
  • Stomach torsion (bloat), especially in fast eaters
  • Skin problems due to insufficient care

The average life expectancy is 12-15 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet rich in protein and fat is important for this breed. An adult Chippiparai eats an average of 300-500 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Fresh water should always be available.

Training and socialization

The Chippiparai is intelligent, but also independent, meaning he needs consistent training. Positive reinforcement and patient guidance help him become obedient. Early socialization is important to make him confident in a variety of environments.

Suitability for owners

This breed is suitable for experienced and active owners who spend a lot of time outdoors and want a dog that combines speed and athleticism with loyalty. The Chippiparai is less suitable for apartment dwellers or those who don't have much time for exercise and training.
