Chihuahua (Small Breed)

Alternative names: No commonly known alternative names

History of the breed

The Chihuahua is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world and has a long history dating back to the ancient civilizations of Mexico. The breed is believed to be a descendant of the Techichi, a small dog kept by the Toltecs and later popularized by the Aztecs. In the 19th century, the Chihuahua was discovered in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, after which the breed received its name and became popular worldwide as a companion dog.

Character and temperament

The Chihuahua is lively, alert, and incredibly devoted to its owner. Despite its small size, it has a big character and can sometimes be stubborn. It is intelligent and eager to learn, but can also be watchful and territorial. The Chihuahua is very sociable with its family but can be reserved or even suspicious of strangers. Early socialization is important to make it confident and well-behaved.

Care and shedding

A Chihuahua's grooming needs depend on its coat type. The short-haired Chihuahua requires little maintenance and can be brushed weekly to remove loose hair. The long-haired variety requires more frequent brushing to prevent tangles. This breed sheds lightly to moderately throughout the year. Regular checks of the ears, teeth, and nails are important to prevent health problems.

Movement and activity

Although small, the Chihuahua is energetic and loves playing and short walks. They need daily exercise, but can also burn off a lot of energy indoors. Long walks are possible, but keep their small frame and fragility in mind.

Barking

The Chihuahua barks moderately to heavily. It's alert and tends to bark at new sounds or unfamiliar people. This can be useful as a watchdog, but requires training to prevent excessive barking.

Good with kids?

The Chihuahua gets along well with older, respectful children. Due to its small and fragile size, it's less suitable for young children who might accidentally play with it too roughly. Calm and patient handling is essential to prevent accidents.

Health

The Chihuahua is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:

  • Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
  • Dental problems due to his small jaw
  • Eye problems such as dry eyes and cataracts
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially in very small Chihuahuas

The average life expectancy is 12-20 years.

Power supply

Due to its small size, the Chihuahua only needs a small amount of food per day. An adult Chihuahua eats an average of 50-100 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. It's important to choose high-quality food suitable for small dog breeds.

Training and socialization

The Chihuahua is intelligent and learns quickly, but can also be stubborn. Consistent, patient training with positive reinforcement works best. Socialization from an early age is crucial to build confidence and prevent unwanted barking or anxiety.

Suitability for owners

This breed is perfect for those looking for a small, lively companion dog. It's a good fit for apartments and smaller homes, as long as it gets enough attention and exercise. The Chihuahua is less suitable for families with young children or those who have little time to spend with their dog.
