Chien Français Blanc et Noir

Alternative names: French White and Black Dog

History of the breed

The Chien Français Blanc et Noir (White and Black French Hound) is a French hunting dog that traces its origins to the ancient Saintonge Hound. Nearly extinct during the French Revolution, the breed was revived in the late 19th century through crossbreeding with the Gascon Saintongeois and later the Poitevin. The breed was officially recognized in 1957. Today, it is primarily used for hunting in packs of large game, such as red deer and roe deer.

Character and temperament

This dog is known for its tenacity during the hunt, as well as its keen sense of smell and loud voice. Despite its role as a pack dog, it is friendly and easygoing with people. It is loyal, intelligent, and has a strong work ethic. While naturally sociable with other dogs, it can have an independent streak, which can make training challenging for inexperienced owners.

Care and shedding

The short coat of the Chien Français Blanc et Noir requires minimal grooming. Weekly brushing is sufficient to keep the coat clean and healthy and to remove loose hair. This breed sheds moderately and has little odor. Regular checks of the ears, teeth, and nails are important to prevent health problems.

Movement and activity

As an energetic and athletic dog, the Chien Français Blanc et Noir needs plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, runs, and play sessions in a securely fenced area are ideal for meeting their exercise needs. Because of their strong prey drive, it's important to keep them leashed in unfenced areas. Mental stimulation, such as puzzles and training sessions, helps keep them mentally sharp and satisfied.

Barking

This dog has a deep, loud bark, making it an excellent watchdog. It barks primarily to alert its owner to unusual activity or intruders, but is otherwise quite quiet. Early socialization and training can help minimize unwanted barking.

Good with kids?

With proper socialization, the Chien Français Blanc et Noir gets along well with children. They are generally patient and tolerant, but due to their energy level and size, it's important to supervise interactions with young children. Children should learn how to treat the dog respectfully to promote a harmonious relationship.

Health

There are no known specific hereditary health problems for this breed. Generally, the Chien Français Blanc et Noir is a healthy and robust breed. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and sufficient exercise contribute to its overall health and well-being.

Power supply

A balanced diet rich in protein and fat is essential for the Chien Français Blanc et Noir to support its energy levels. The amount of food depends on its age, weight, and activity level, but on average, an adult dog needs about 300-500 grams of high-quality dry food per day, divided into two meals. Always provide fresh drinking water.

Training and socialization

The Chien Français Blanc et Noir is intelligent and learns quickly, but can sometimes be stubborn. Early socialization and obedience training are crucial for developing a well-behaved dog. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, work best with this breed. Consistency and patience from the owner are important for achieving successful training results.

Suitability for owners

This breed is suitable for active owners who are willing to invest time and energy in exercise and training. The Chien Français Blanc et Noir is a good fit for families with older children and experienced dog owners familiar with independent breeds. Due to its high energy level and need for space, it is less suitable for apartment living or for owners with a sedentary lifestyle.
