History of the breed
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest dog breeds in Wales, descended from the dachshund-like dogs brought over by Celtic tribes thousands of years ago. This breed was originally bred as a working dog to herd livestock and protect them from predators. The name "Cardigan" refers to the Cardiganshire region of Wales, where they primarily worked on farms. Although often confused with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan is a distinct breed with a longer history and distinctive features, such as its tail.

Character and temperament
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. They are playful, affectionate, and form strong bonds with their families. Although friendly, they can be reserved with strangers. This makes them excellent watchdogs. Thanks to their sharp minds, they are quick to train, but they require a consistent and patient approach to temper their stubbornness.

Physical characteristics
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is compact but sturdy, with a low, long back and short legs. Their double coat offers protection from various weather conditions. Common colors include red, sable, brindle, black with white markings, and blue merle. Their neck and chest circumference typically ranges from 35-45 cm (14-18 inches), depending on the individual, which is important when choosing a collar or harness.

Care
The Cardigan's dense double coat requires regular brushing, especially during the shedding seasons in spring and fall. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keeps the skin healthy. Check the ears, teeth, and nails regularly to prevent infections or discomfort.

Movement and activity
Cardigan Welsh Corgis are active dogs that need daily exercise. A mix of walks, playtime, and mental stimulation keeps them happy and healthy. They are naturally curious and enjoy activities like obedience, agility, and herding.

Health
Although generally healthy, Cardigans can be prone to certain hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and back problems due to their tall build. Regular veterinary checkups are essential. Their life expectancy is between 12 and 15 years.
