Boerboel

Boerboel

  • Alternative names: South African Mastiff.

History of the breed

The Boerboel originates from South Africa and was developed in the 17th century by Dutch colonists. This breed was bred as a versatile working dog to protect farms from wild animals and intruders. Its name is derived from the Afrikaans word "boer," meaning farmer, and "boel," an informal term for a large dog. The Boerboel is known for its strength, courage, and loyalty and is kept today as both a guard dog and a family dog.

Character and temperament

The Boerboel is a powerful, confident, and loyal dog. He is very protective of his family and has a natural watchfulness. Despite his imposing appearance, he is gentle and patient, especially with children. This breed is intelligent and devoted, but needs a consistent and experienced owner to manage his strong personality.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height : 60-70 cm.
  • Weight : 50-90 kg.
  • Coat : Short, dense and smooth.
  • Colors : Various shades of brown, red, fawn, or brindle, often with a black mask.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference of 55-75 cm, chest circumference of 90-120 cm.

Care

The Boerboel's short coat requires minimal grooming. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keeps the skin healthy. Regularly check his ears, especially after outdoor activities, and keep his nails short. Due to his large size, good dental care is important to prevent dental problems.

Movement and activity

Although a Boerboel is a large dog, it needs daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Long walks, playtime, and activities such as obedience training are essential. It enjoys tasks that challenge its intelligence and physical strength, but avoid excessive strenuous physical activity, especially during its growth period, to prevent joint problems.

Health

The Boerboel is a robust breed, but can be susceptible to:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Gastric torsion (bloat)
  • Heart problems

The average life expectancy is 9-11 years.

Nutrition

A balanced diet suited to its large size and energy level is essential. On average, a Boerboel eats 800-1200 grams of food per day, divided over two meals. Choose food that supports joint health and adjust the amount to its activity level and age.

Training and socialization

The Boerboel is an intelligent dog that learns quickly, but it has a strong and independent personality. Positive reinforcement and a consistent, firm approach are important. Early socialization is crucial to ensure that it interacts well with other people, animals, and situations. Training should focus on obedience and control, given its strength and protective instincts.

Suitability for owners

The Boerboel is ideal for experienced dog owners seeking a powerful, loyal, and protective dog. It's well-suited to families who can provide ample exercise, training, and attention. This breed thrives in a home with a large, fenced yard where it can move freely. It's less suitable for city apartments or owners without experience with large, independent dogs. The Boerboel is an excellent guard dog, but needs an owner who can properly manage its natural protective instincts. Its strong bond with its family makes it a devoted companion, but it's susceptible to separation anxiety and doesn't thrive in environments where it's often left alone.
