Biewer Terrier
Biewer Terrier
- Alternative names: Biewer Yorkshire Terrier à la Pom Pon.
History of the breed
The Biewer Terrier is a relatively new breed, originating in Germany in the 1980s. This breed is the result of a genetic mutation in Yorkshire Terriers, resulting in a unique tricolor coat. Gertrud and Werner Biewer discovered and developed this breed, which was later named after them. Known for its elegant appearance and playful nature, the Biewer Terrier is becoming increasingly popular as a companion dog.
Character and temperament
The Biewer Terrier is a cheerful, gentle, and sociable dog. It is intelligent, eager to learn, and loves attention. This breed is very devoted to its family and is known for its playful and affectionate nature. It gets along well with children and other pets, provided it is properly socialized.

Care
The Biewer Terrier has a long, silky coat that requires daily brushing to prevent tangles. Regular bathing and professional grooming are recommended to keep its unique coat in top condition. Check its ears regularly, keep its nails trimmed, and ensure good dental care, as this breed is prone to dental problems.
Movement and activity
Although the Biewer Terrier is small, it needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Daily short walks and playtime indoors or in the yard are ideal. It enjoys mental challenges, such as interactive games or short training sessions.
Health
The Biewer Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but may be prone to:
- Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
- Dental problems
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in young puppies
The average life expectancy is 12-15 years.
Power supply
A balanced diet with high-quality ingredients is essential. Due to its small size, the Biewer Terrier needs an average of 50-100 grams of food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Choose small kibbles suitable for its teeth and feed it in several small meals throughout the day.
Training and socialization
The Biewer Terrier is intelligent and learns quickly, but can sometimes be stubborn. Positive reinforcement works best. Early socialization is important to ensure they are confident in various situations and interact well with other animals and people. They respond well to short, varied training sessions.
Suitability for owners
The Biewer Terrier is an ideal dog for those looking for a small, affectionate, and playful companion. It's a good fit for families, singles, and seniors who want to spend time grooming, interacting, and exercising. Its small size makes it suitable for apartments, but it does require daily exercise to prevent boredom. The Biewer Terrier is perfect for owners who enjoy a close bond with their dog, as it's sensitive and demands a lot of attention. It's less suitable for busy families with little time for itself, as it dislikes being left alone and forms a strong bond with its family. This breed is also ideal for those who enjoy grooming and maintaining a beautiful coat.
