History of the breed

The Bichon Havanais, also known as the Havanese, is one of the oldest members of the Bichon family. This breed originated in the Mediterranean and was brought to Cuba by European settlers, where it developed further. The Havanese quickly became popular with the Cuban elite for its charming appearance and cheerful personality. The breed is known as the national dog of Cuba.

Character and temperament

The Havanese is a friendly, sociable, and intelligent dog. It is known for its playful and affectionate nature and loves attention from its family. This breed is very good with children and other pets and easily adapts to various living situations. It is alert and watchful, but not aggressive, making it an excellent family dog.

Physical characteristics

  • Weight : 4-7 kg.
  • Coat : Long, soft and silky with a slightly wavy or curly texture.
  • Colors : Various colors, including white, cream, gold, brown, gray and black, or a combination of these.
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference 25-35 cm, chest circumference 40-50 cm.

Care

The Havanese's long, soft coat requires regular grooming. Weekly brushing prevents tangles and helps keep the coat in top condition. This breed sheds very little, making it ideal for allergy sufferers. Check the ears regularly, keep the nails trimmed, and ensure good dental care.

Movement and activity

The Havanese is an active and playful breed that needs daily exercise. Short walks, playtime, and mental stimulation, such as interactive games, keep them healthy and happy. This breed is energetic but doesn't require excessive exercise, making it perfect for both houses with yards and apartments.

Health

The Havanese is a relatively healthy breed, but may be prone to:

  • Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
  • Eye problems, such as cataracts
  • Deafness (congenital or age-related)
  • Allergies and skin problems

The average life expectancy is between 12-16 years.

Power supply

A balanced diet appropriate for their size and activity level is important. A Havanese needs an average of 100-150 grams of food per day, divided into two meals. Make sure the food is rich in high-quality proteins to support their energetic lifestyle.

Training and socialization

The Havanese is intelligent and eager to learn, making it relatively easy to train. It responds well to positive reinforcement and learns new commands quickly. Early socialization is important to ensure it remains confident in new situations. This breed loves being with its people and enjoys activities like learning tricks and obedience training.

Suitability for owners

The Havanese is ideal for families, singles, and seniors. It adapts well to various living situations and enjoys company. This breed is not suitable for owners who are often away from home, as it is prone to separation anxiety.
