Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Laufhund (Bernese Hound)

  • Alternative names: Swiss Mountain Dog, Swiss Hunting Dog.

History of the breed

The Bernese Laufhund is one of the four Swiss Laufhunds, a breed group with a long history in Switzerland. These dogs were originally bred for hunting in mountainous regions, where their excellent nose and endurance made them ideal partners. The Bernese Laufhund is distinguished by its characteristic tricolor coat and its ability to efficiently track and follow game.

Character and temperament

The Bernese Laufhund is a friendly and active dog with a highly developed sense of smell and a great passion for hunting. This breed is devoted to its family and is known for its gentle and sociable nature. Although it can be independent due to its hunting instinct, it also enjoys human company and enjoys working together.

Physical characteristics

  • Shoulder height : 40-50 cm.
  • Weight : 15-20 kg.
  • Coat : Short, smooth and shiny.
  • Colors : Tricolor (black, white, and rust brown).
  • Sizes for collars and harnesses : Neck circumference 35-45 cm, chest circumference 55-65 cm.

Care

The Bernese Laufhund requires little coat care. Weekly brushing is sufficient to keep the coat healthy and shiny. Check the ears regularly, especially since this dog can be prone to ear infections due to its long, drooping ears. Also, ensure good dental care and trim the nails as needed.

Movement and activity

This breed needs plenty of exercise and is suitable for active owners. Daily walks and runs are essential, as are opportunities to use its nose, for example, through tracking activities or search games. The Bernese Laufhund is an excellent companion for outdoor activities, but also needs a securely fenced yard to prevent it from hunting.

Health

The Bernese Laufhund is generally a healthy breed with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Possible health problems include:

  • Ear infections (due to the hanging ears)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Overweight (if not getting enough exercise)

Power supply

The Bernese Laufhund needs a balanced diet that matches its energy level. On average, it needs 200-300 grams of food per day, depending on its activity level and weight. Make sure it doesn't get too many treats, especially when it's less active.

Training and socialization

Although the Bernese Laufhund has an independent nature, it responds well to positive reinforcement. Early socialization and training are important to prevent it from becoming too dominant or disobedient. Obedience training and tracking can utilize its natural talents and strengthen its bond with its owner.

Suitability for owners

This breed is ideal for experienced dog owners who have the time and energy to provide them with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. The Bernese Laufhund is less suitable for apartment living unless it gets plenty of daily exercise.
