Beagle-Harrier
History of the Beagle-Harrier
The Beagle-Harrier is a relatively young breed originating in France. Developed in the 19th century by crossing the Beagle and the Harrier, the breed aimed to create a medium-sized hunting dog suitable for pursuing game such as hares and deer. Beagle-Harriers combine the best qualities of both breeds: the keen nose and stamina of the Harrier, and the friendly, affectionate nature of the Beagle.
Character and Temperament
The Beagle-Harrier is an energetic, social, and intelligent dog. They are friendly and form strong bonds with their families, making them excellent family dogs. Their hunting background means they have a keen sense of smell and can be independent. They love activity and need an owner who can keep up with their physical and mental needs.
Physical Characteristics
The Beagle-Harrier is a medium-sized dog with an athletic build. They have a short, smooth coat that is often tricolor (black, white, and brown) or bicolor (white and brown). Their ears are medium-sized and pendulous, like those of the Beagle. An adult Beagle-Harrier has a shoulder height of 45-50 cm and weighs an average of 19-21 kg.
Collar/harness sizes:
- Neck circumference: 35-45 cm
- Chest circumference: 55-65 cm
Care
The Beagle-Harrier's coat is easy to maintain. Regular brushing is sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the coat in good condition. Regularly check their ears to prevent infections, especially after walks in woods or bushes. Don't forget to trim their nails and keep their teeth clean.
Movement and Activity
The Beagle-Harrier is an active dog that needs a lot of daily exercise. Long walks, running, and tracking activities are ideal. They have a strong tendency to follow their noses, so it's important to keep them on a leash in open areas. Due to their energetic nature, they are also suitable for dog sports such as agility or tracking.
Health
The Beagle-Harrier is generally a healthy breed, but they can be prone to hip dysplasia and ear infections. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are essential to maintain their health. The average lifespan of a Beagle-Harrier is 10-13 years.
Nutrition
A balanced diet is crucial for the Beagle-Harrier. They need approximately 250-350 grams of high-quality dog food per day, depending on their age, size, and activity level. Divide the food into two meals and monitor their weight, as they can be prone to obesity.
Training and Socialization
The Beagle-Harrier is intelligent and eager to learn, but requires a consistent and patient approach due to their independent nature. Positive reinforcement works best when training this breed. Early socialization is crucial to ensure they are well-adjusted in various environments and situations.
Suitability for Owners
The Beagle-Harrier is an excellent choice for active families and individuals who can dedicate time and energy to their exercise and mental stimulation. They adapt well to households with children or other dogs, provided sufficient attention and activity are given.
