Barbet (French Water Dog)

History of the Barbet

The Barbet is an ancient French breed originally bred as a water dog. The breed was described as early as the Middle Ages and was known for its exceptional skills in hunting waterfowl. The name "Barbet" is derived from the French word "barbe," meaning beard, referring to their characteristic bearded appearance. The Barbet was not only used for hunting, but also as a companion animal and working dog in the countryside. After World War II, the breed was nearly extinct, but thanks to enthusiasts, the Barbet has now recovered and is regaining popularity.

There are no other known names for this breed. Furthermore, the Barbet is a rare breed. Breeding these dogs is limited, meaning there are often long waiting lists for people who want to acquire a puppy.

Character and Temperament

The Barbet is known as a friendly, affectionate, and intelligent dog. They are social and adapt well to various situations. Barbets make excellent family companions, as they get along well with children and other pets. They enjoy being around people and have a strong need for social interaction.

Physical Characteristics

The Barbet is a medium-sized dog with a stocky, athletic build. Their thick, curly coat is water-repellent and can come in various colors, including black, gray, brown, and fawn. An adult Barbet stands approximately 58-65 cm (male) or 53-61 cm (female) at the withers and weighs an average of 17-28 kg.

Collar/harness sizes:

  • Neck circumference: 40-50 cm

  • Chest circumference: 60-75 cm

Care

The Barbet's thick, curly coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting. It's important to brush the coat weekly and have it trimmed every few months. Because their coat is water and dirt-repellent, it stays relatively clean, but always check for dirt after walks in muddy or wooded areas. Also pay attention to their ears, as Barbets can be prone to ear infections.

Movement and Activity

The Barbet is an active dog that needs plenty of daily exercise. Long walks, swimming, and fetch games are all favorites. They are also suitable for dog sports such as agility and obedience training. Barbets love water and will seize every opportunity to take a dip, a trait stemming from their history as water dogs.

Health

Generally, the Barbet is a healthy breed, but as with many breeds, there are some health issues to watch out for, such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Regular check-ups with the vet are essential to ensure your Barbet's health. The average lifespan of a Barbet is 12-15 years.

Nutrition

A Barbet needs a balanced diet appropriate for its size, age, and activity level. An average adult Barbet needs approximately 250-350 grams of high-quality dog food per day, divided into two meals. Ensure the food is rich in protein and fats to support their energy levels. Consult your veterinarian about the best nutritional choices for your dog.

Training and Socialization

The Barbet is intelligent and eager to please, making training relatively easy. Start socialization at a young age to ensure your Barbet is confident and well-adjusted in various environments. Positive reinforcement works best, as they are sensitive to harsh corrections. They excel in obedience training and learn new commands quickly.

Suitability for Owners

The Barbet is an ideal dog for active families and individuals who enjoy spending time outdoors. They need a lot of exercise and attention, making them less suitable for people who are often away from home. This breed thrives best in an environment where they can be part of the daily family life.
