History
The Artois-Normand Basset is an ancient French hunting dog breed, originating in the 19th century from crosses between the Norman Hound and other French Bassets. The breed was specifically developed for hunting small game, such as hares and rabbits. Their short legs and strong sense of smell make them excellent at tracking game in dense undergrowth. Today, this breed is valued as both a hunting and companion dog.
Character and Temperament
The Artois-Normand Basset is friendly, patient, and sociable. They are very attached to their families and known for their gentle nature. Despite their calm temperament, they are also energetic and playful. Their hunting instinct can make them somewhat independent, requiring consistent training. They get along well with children and other pets, provided they are properly socialized.

Life expectancy of the Artois-Normandy Basset
With proper care and nutrition, they can reach an age of 12-15 years.
Nutrition
A balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins and fats is essential. An adult Basset Hound needs an average of 300-400 grams of dog food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Always provide fresh water.
Training and Socialization
These dogs are intelligent and eager to learn, but can sometimes be stubborn. Early socialization and positive reinforcement are essential to develop a well-adjusted and obedient pet. Their hunting instinct can be channeled through scent detection training and scent games.
Suitability for Owners
The Artois-Normand Basset is suitable for families, single people, or seniors looking for a loving and active dog. They are less suitable for people who have little time to dedicate to exercise and attention. A garden is ideal, but not a substitute for daily walks.
