History

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an ancient breed originating in Anatolia, Turkey. Originally bred as a guardian dog, this breed was used to protect livestock from predators such as wolves and bears. Their independence and strength made them ideal for this task. The breed is still used as a working dog, but is also gaining popularity as a family pet.

Character and Temperament

The Anatolian Shepherd is vigilant, courageous, and highly independent. They possess a strong protective instinct and take their role as guardians of their family extremely seriously. While loving towards their family, they can be reserved or wary of strangers. This breed requires an experienced owner who is confident and assertive.

Movement and Activity

Although the Anatolian Shepherd is not an extremely active dog, it needs daily exercise. Long walks and a large garden where it can move freely are ideal. Due to their working history, they thrive when given a task, such as guarding the property.

Health

The Anatolian Shepherd is a robust breed, but may be prone to:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Elbow dysplasia

  • Entropion (eyelid problems)

  • Thyroid problems With proper care and nutrition, they can live to be 11-13 years old.

Nutrition

This breed requires a balanced, protein-rich diet. An adult Anatolian Shepherd eats an average of 500-800 grams of dog food per day, depending on its weight and activity level. Always provide fresh water.

Training and Socialization

The Anatolian Shepherd is intelligent but also very independent. Early socialization and training are crucial to prevent them from becoming overly protective or dominant. They need an owner who has experience with large, independent dogs and can set clear boundaries.

Suitability for Owners

This breed is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners. They are ideal for owners with plenty of space, such as a farm or a large fenced yard. They are less suitable for apartments or families with little time for training and exercise. Their independent nature makes them a challenge, but with the right guidance they are loyal companions.
